kate and travis maternity session

Earlier in July Erik and I had one of the most fun shoots- can you say maternity shoot on a farm on a late summer afternoon??

Curious George 2: Follow That Monkey buy

I sure can, and I WILL!

Last year Erik photographed Kate and Travis’ wedding and when they got pregnant he was their go-to guy for their pre-baby session. And why wouldn’t he be? Erik is so incredibly talented- I just love how he sees life. Not only that- he is such a calming presence during a shoot, I love working along side his quiet genius and am always just blown away with what he produces.

Here is my interpretation of our tag-team style maternity session!

Now, one of the things I kind of insist on is the timing of our shoots: late afternoon or bust, baby! This gives you the opportunity to catch the changing light from later afternoon, to low and rich to dusk to sunset, to evening. Talk about natural light variety!

See what I’m saying?

Throw in a field and barn for good measure

Make that a RED old tyme barn please and thank you

maternity session at the studio

Maternity sessions are in full swing here at the studio! And while I feel like I am earning the rep for being an ‘urban maternity’ shooting kind of gal, we decided to change it up a bit and shoot only at the studio for Christy’s session. Well, that and the fact that it was way too chilly out to go parading around all exposed and stuff.

Maternity sessions for me are starting to really become my ‘thing’ –  in addition to weddings. My husband and I were talking about this today- about how to really make your mark on the world- and it got me thinking…. and I realized that making people feel beautiful is what I love to do. It applies to EVERY type of shoot I do, whether it’s weddings, or maternity or boudoir… and I came to the conclusion that these three types of shoots are exactly what that is about!

Feeling beautiful.

I walk around with a pair of extreme home makeover glasses on my eyes- meaning- just give me 10 minutes alone with you and my camera and I will show you what I see…. a beautiful person that’s either already there in full view or someone just lurking below the surface… Maybe it’s someone who never really saw themselves in that way before…maybe they have always wanted to be made to feel beautiful or sexy, but thought that no one could see that about them.

It’s like in the Wizard of Oz…when the house lands and Dorothy opens the door… and the world is in color…. I see you all in color!

OK, enough lovey dovey-ness! Without further delay…. this is what I came back with… after the house landed!

…she fit so nicely on my new couch, and so I went with it!!

my new favorite spot to photograph- the light here is all natural and simply radiant! Having a perfect pregnant lady here certainly doesn’t hurt either!

amber and justin urban maternity shoot

This ALMOST got categorized in my ‘ridiculousness’ category! Because Amber and Justin are so photogenic and ready to tear up my camera, it was pretty ridiculous!! Just ask Katie!

Amber is due in about four weeks and she looks fantastic, radiant, and is sporting her pink streak in honor of the little baby girl she’s cooking up in her belly. Now I’ve been booking a lot of shoots lately pretty much ’site unseen’ meaning that people are forgoing the need to meet me in person before hiring me! It’s pretty awesome, time saving and gives me a little bit of an element of surprise as to what to expect at our shoot. I. LOVED. IT!

Justin was so comfortable and seemed to just know what I was going for- he was a dream. And those dusky grey blue eyes? Gorgeous!! Add the spiky hair and skull sweatshirt? My kind of guy!!

Amber is my new poster child for my urban maternity shoots, I swear! She let me unleash all of these awesome images that I had locked in my brain for a long time, and I am so thankful to her and Justin for trusting me  to just let me have my way- nasty old parking lot and all!! They did not even flinch at anything that I asked them to do….

So, thank you again for your trust in what I had stored away in my dusty old head!! You guys ROCKED IT!!!

I started off kind of engagement shoot style, and didn’t obsess about having to shoot Amber’s belly from the get go…it really let them loosen up and get a feel for what a spaz I can be when I am feeling it! I just could not hold my excitement in at seeing how they were in front of the camera…!

The Good Shepherd movie

These two had killer eyes, and I really had fun showcasing them. And the pink streak? What do YOU think? Yeah, home, freaking RUN

Beerfest trailer

Textures and tummy = super yummy!

Yes, she DID totally climb up onto this wall for this shot…she was such an adventurous subject so naturally we got along swimmingly!

Vines, cuddling, and even a brick wall. Yes I know I have admitted publicly that I kind of have an aversion to brick. But this combo was perfect- it had style

They were so natural together they needed SO little direction from me

The History of the Luftwaffe full movie

Justin’s skull sweatshirt was MONEY

Meet my new favorite doorway! The light here was out of control. I love Hartford!!

Ong bak 2 movie

Nooks and crannies abound- and despite the super chilly temps, we toughed it out

Now here I started off going for a shadow shot, and while I did get some images I enjoy I looked up and saw Amber looking like this and was like DANG (graham) and kind of tricked her into not realizing I was actually shooting her….love, love love!!!

Gone hd

Hartford was Heckle-Ville for me from this point on! My GOD people felt the need to give me their two cents on what I was doing, it was comical! OK, maybe it was because I was laying in the middle of the street in traffic making a pregnant woman freeze but whatever, we did it for art!! Right Amber?

I know, I know, I kept getting all engagement shoot on my self over here!! But I really dig this one

There was a WHOLE lotta yelling at this point! Robert Norman would have loved to have seen me at this point! Not to mention that Hartford’s finest pulls up to the light and a la Mike Romano, gets all funky on their copper loud speaker and…..HECKLES ME!!!  It made us laugh, for sure!

But seriously? Can she BE any cuter?
