happy mother's day

.!.

Happy Mother’s Day to all of the Moms in the house! I hope everyone enjoyed the company of their Mom, or if you are a Mom yourself, I trust you were cuddled and snuggled and fawned over appropriately! Whether your Mom is living or not, I hope that you took the time to stop and appreciate all that your Mom has done for you and will continue to do for you. And yes, I realize that not all Mom’s are saints, Mom’s are people too who make mistakes and bad choices in life too. So celebrate THAT with a Hallmark card, right?

One of the things that I remember as a kid that either my Mom or my Dad did I can’t honestly say but I loved, involved pictures of me. They had me sit in front of the kitchen windows and make all kinds of faces. ‘Make a scared face’ or ’show us your happy face’ were the directions I got. I was SOOO freaking cheesy and did I cheese it UP for the camera! I had such a bowl cut going on, and I swear I was Georgie’s stunt double. So this afternoon, while gardening with G I brought my camera out for a quick session that kind of morphed into a recreations of my childhood shoot… Georgie is such a HAM!

On a nerdy note: these were all straight out of the camera (my Nikon D700 and shot with my 50 mm 1.4 G lens, wide open at 1.4, my white balance was the cloud because I tend to favor slightly warmer images- No light room adjustments or photoshop aside form the layout and branding was done to the images) I got the D700 a month or so ago to have on hand as my primary backup to the D3 and my other lighter camera for quick shoots. I really love it and can’t recommend it enough if you are thinking of making the leap from a D300 to a full frame camera. DO IT! Corvette Summer ipod

Jack on the other hand… would rather play with his friends than be with me and was pouting when I told him he had to come home  and be with me! I let him play with them on the porch and he came back around and told me how much he loved me later… but how cute is he sitting here in the driveway pouting???

murchie family portrait shoot

OK- I am going to breathe a BIG sigh of relief and come out of the closet and admit: I DO FAMILY SHOOTS!!! Hah! Big confession, right? In my crazy mind, yes.

I have been asked if I do family shoots for a long time- and for a long time I said no. No, you say? Yes, I can say no to shooting, as painful as it was for me I did. The reason? I felt like people expected the ‘everyone look at the camera and say cheese’ family picture from me…which I don’t do, nor do I want to. I have to stay true to the vision I have for how I want us to photograph our families. And so? I do my thing and if it’s what you like, then give us a shout!!

So that being said I want to introduce to you something that I would love to implement at every shoot: the family favorite!

Every kid goes through their favorite phase, and it is subject to change year to year…it’s one of the things I love seeing my kids transition through and so I thought I would show my families how I see their kids’ favorite things…

Sophie loves her Gigi; Gus his DS and Alice loves her Fishy Blanket

Meet Gus and James, his bunny

Sophie was my BFF and loved hooking me up with shots throughout our session…she was soooooo much fun to photograph
