____________

Teaching this past month’s Ten Eyck Tuesday Lighting Photography workshop was beyond amazing. Watching everyone literally ’see the light’ and then me seeing the proverbial light going off in their heads and eyes as they connected all of the dots was, as I said it- pretty amazing.

I can’t say I wasn’t intimidated once I thought about what I was putting myself out there to do. Me? Teach a lighting class? I can think of about 27 other photographers who can name that color temperature faster than I can say Pocket Wizard! OK sorry that was a little on the nerdy side but you know all the geeks in the house laughed! But seriously. Let’s take those manuals and put them where they belong: under my coffee table that rocks a little and ends up spilling my drinks! For real!

And so we ventured out into the chilly night and explored the light that was around us, and all of the light that we brought along for the ride…

Here is my 2010 client Kelsey (from the RI beach engagement shoot with her fiancee Jeff) braving the opposite weather extreme because, well, she is awesome!

Seriously. I think I am going to say that a lot.

Here Eileen and Sara work it out

christine and mark new york city engagement session

A few weeks back I headed into New York for an engagement session with my New Year’s Eve couple, Christine and Mark. To say these guys have chemistry is the understatement of the year!! They were so incredible together and no matter how many times they told me they never really had their picture taken together, the less I believed them, because they were like supermodels for me!!

Check out Mark. Come on. YIKES!

Now you know I never let the rain get me down, and so we met up at the Bethesda Fountain- it’s the perfect place to hang out if it rains and wait for it to dry up a bit and then venture out when it stops!

One of my favorite ways to shoot- through water! Love it love it love it!

Miss Christine gets mad props for braving the cold- which she is not a fan of, to say the least…. but look at her working it!

Another favorite, the band shell! My favorite though? My clients!!

What a great smile

The Mall in Central Park is another favorite place of mine to shoot- it’s so beautiful and timeless and I always feel like I have been transported to someplace special

Love their spontaneity!

One of their favorite restaurants in the city, Pastis

And this? Well, I just stumbled upon this and I am so happy that I did!!! One of the little challenges that I gave myself for this shoot was to not bring my flash with me, fully knowing I was going to be shooting at night. See, light is everywhere and since i have been so up my pocket wizard’s, well, you know- I decided to make sure I still knew how to see light the old fashioned way.

With my eyes.

Another found light source!

And Grand Central, always a favorite and at RUSH HOUR!!!

You have no idea how many people were probably cursing me here, I was standing still in the massive sea of people, shooting! Whatever, I had to get my shot! No flash, just ambient Grand Central Light.

Christine and Mark, thank you thank you thank you for being so incredibly easy to work with-

I am SO excited for your wedding!!

XO

caitlin and scott block island engagement session

I am finally able to post this awesome engagement session that Mike and I shot on Block Island back at the end of August!! Our 2010 clients Caitlin and Scott met us on Block for their shoot on one of the most beautiful days we have had this summer. So what do Mike and I do? We make it into a family vacation and bring our spouses and kids- even Dominique- my BFF and Office Manager came along with her family! After chilling on the beach with our families for the day- we had caught the first ferry over in order to take advantage of the day- Mike and I met up with Caitlin and Scott for our shoot.

Late afternoon on a beautiful summers day is like the ULTIMATE shooting experience for me- we are able to cover so many different light types in our span of shooting- from nice strong bright light- to warmer heavier light, to dusk, to sunset to twilight… we love it all and try to have fun and experiment with new lighting techniques since we have the time and no pressure like on a wedding day! So here is what we came back with…..

*batteries not included trailer

Our first stop was this awesome old tyme light house…

Right next to it was this hellish walk down some super steep stairs to this super awesome beach- for some reason I feel like we are in Honduras or someplace- not even remotely sure if Honduras is even on a coast line!! Embarrassing! I should stop.

But I love love love it!!

These guys. They had so much fun and were so comfortable in front of the camera, Mike and I just loved them

Here Mr. Mike gets all stealth and shoots them this way

…while I sneak this shot. This is the type of shot where I am half hoping that someone in the waves is like doing something totally stupid and trying to ruin my shot- cuz that’s funny!

The cliffs were so awesome- there was even a place where people were walking around all covered in clay!

Helpmates divx

Here is one of those points during our shoot when I get really really close to my clients for the modified prom pose snuggle

Here is Mike shooting, on the right is what he got! I think everyone’s calves look fabulous!!!

Our next stop was the iconic Spring House…. and the light at this time was super duper scream-worthy. It was.

Medicine Man

Mike and I really love showing the world just kind of going on around us while we shoot- here Mike caught these lovely ladies enjoying their beach reading while we were all about the shoot….

Another Mike Romano blue light special… what a view

Again with the Mike Romano shot- here he focuses on something entirely different than I was, and I am really digging it

Scooba-dee- freaking DOO!!

Hey there Scott

This is what I was shooting when Mike focused on Caitlin’s shoes

These guys were laughing at me. It’s easy to do!!

Close Encounters of the Third Kind film

While Mike IS being helpful (he was snagging the shoes in the frame for me) I had to shoot this since he says I am always in his shots!! Well.

Here is what I wanted to get, sans Mike. But thank you for getting the shoes

And then? Do you like Pina Coladas? I know we are not on the Cape. But we were rocking the dunes

Here is Mike’s opinion of this situation

More Mike, on the job, saying his peace

Back to Me, alllllll about meeeeeee. Wait. No Caitlin and Scott!! (and me too)

It’s like ping pong. More Mike. Love it!!

I love the piggy back on the beach scenario, like a LOT

Add to that the feet in the surf with the sunset? Mike gets what I’m saying- as this is his shot!!!!

Sunset city!!! Just pretty times all around

download Deadly Blessing dvd

Back to Mike and the feet!

Radio Flyer movie download

So then *I* got into the water….. and there is a story here, coming up….wait for it…..

and I get the reflections, that I love so much, and the light, and the color, and THEM!!!

and then I change it up a tad….. hamilton

Then we saw the moon was out!!! At sunset!!! And so my wheels are turning…. wait for it….

A little purposeful separation

BAM! you know Mike and I just had to bust out with some night lights….. still….wait for it

Slipstream ipod

And I’m free flowing up on the dance floor, Mike is my light stand, my lighting wing man….. we’re still waiting…..

Then I tag in for Mike and become his lighting gal for this shot- all Mike-

One of my faves, a happy little image

OK. So then I get all freaky deeky on myself and decide that it is in fact a FANTASTIC idea to do a two light set up- one Mike will have to side light Caitlin and Scott- Mike is in the water holding a light and the other light  with a pocket wizard was on the beach….WAY past the tide line, right.

Right.

Guess what happened. See the light in the back and how it is like, reflecting into like, the WATER?

yeeeeaaaaahhhhhh…….

Mike ran his fanny off grabbing it, but it was FULL of sand and water….. BUT.

I LOVE this shot!!!!!!

Caitlin and Scott I can’t think you enough for letting us play and swim with our equipment with you guys!!!!

We can’t wait for your wedding!!!!
