callie and niels new york city engagement shoot

Mike and I spent this past SUPER hot Sunday in the fabulous New York City  photographing our June clients Callie and Niels. They are some of the most photogenic people I have photographed, and made our jobs seem like a breeze! Which was good since it was so hot and all….

We started off a their amazing apartment- which had the most incredible patio I have seen in a New York City apartment! This mural was painted specifically for them, so of course we had to start there!

One of my favorite things to do on shoots is to use the natives, wherever we are and work them into the frame. The best part about the city is there never seems to be a shortage of people to use!

Coming out of the subway I saw this and made a play for an absolutely shameless self portrait of Mike and I. Yes I am vain!

The downside to so many people in New York?  SO MANY PEOPLE! I am actually doing a separate post on how I navigated this particular problem! This area was nuts- we were at the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens

This area has been burned into my visual memory and I couldn’t for the life of me place how or why….UNTIL… I popped in my Netflix’d Rescue Me Season 4 disk and watched the opening credits! LOVE this area!!

Mike gets mad props for taking his time here! I got my shot, or so I thought, and was all ready to move on when Mr. Romano said wait and wanted to work it some more…and then I looked down and was like

BAM DIGGITY DAWG

Callie and I were being silly here and this was how we did her spontaneous ring shot

I couldn’t decide which of the two I liked more, and so here they both are

meet my sister tere

This past week I took a vacation week to visit with my oldest sister Tere, who was up from Virginia to catch up with the clan. Tere is an incredible jewelry designer, in addition to be a super cool sister- be sure to check out her site – mypreciousstudio.com and see what she’s all about! She wanted to update her head shots on her site and so she decided to give her little sis a shot.

To cap off our visit we hit up a cemetery in Simsbury and the light was just perfect! Here are our the shots and some behind the scenes to show you where I was and what I got…

There was this really cool gate at the entrance to the cemetery that I just HAD to incorporate….. and so….

Dreamy CITY, love the floating cross on the left

Check me and my reflector out. I really wanted to show some of the flowering trees, of which there were really only two and they had haircuts….so I chose to shoot up on the trees

and this is the result

cool hand luke movie

I am SUPER unobtrusive, right? I swear I DO tell people that eventually I may end up in your grill, like seriously IN it, but that you will actually be OK with it! Tere had a bit of a laughing fit, but that’s OK! Laughing is always good!!

getting up and close and personal pays off!

carlos hernandez chavez, the artist and political activist

This week I had an opportunity to see something really incredible. In and of itself it was awesome- to watch a muralist in the final stages of their process- to see and hear their thought processes- which washes would go where, what tones they were hoping for, textures, overall feel.  The kicker? I was watching my Dad create this masterpiece.

Basic Instinct full

See one of the things that my Dad is like, the BEST at is painting. He is so incredibly talented. But the best part for me? This guy has got something to SAY.

Cinderella II: Dreams Come True psp

there will be live mariachi music!

My sister Tere and I stopped in to see my Dad paint, since Tere won’t be here for the opening. He told us stories about some of his past pieces while he worked. One of them was absolutely heart wrenching. A few years back he had worked on a project with a group of recent immigrants to Connecticut.

Through their stories my Dad became their artistic voice, and told the story of their very difficult journey to the United States by painting a mural. There was one man’s story in particular that my Dad spoke of. He was from Vietnam and was traveling in a group of about twenty people, one of which was a little baby. During a very close call with some hostiles the group was hiding in the reeds and water and the baby started to cry. The mother had no choice but to drown her baby to save the group, who would face certain death if they were caught. My Dad painted these stories, of all of these people that he spoke to and listened to.

Equus move

I would tell you to go see this work of art but someone authorized the painting over of his mural saying that the images were ‘no longer relevant.’

American Swing video

This current show is about the immigrant experience through both of the artists’ experiences. My Dad’s piece features images of my grandfather, great aunts and uncles working in the fields. It is an incredibly powerful piece and I would love to have you all there to celebrate my Dad’s talent, his voice and the experiences of all of the immigrants that have helped shape this country.
